Tree-Face-Walk

First of all to put matters straight "Tree-Face-Walk" was so christened by my wife and myself.
The proper name is "Steckeschlääferklamm" but who would view a page with that terrifying appelation!! - hence "Tree Face Walk".

Here one meanders through a small glade where many of the trees have faces calved into them.
This is ideal if you have children that normally are not too enthusiastic about going on walks.

You often see the kids running off ahead of their parents to find the next face and trying to determine how many there are.

Every one seems to arrive at a different total- normally between 50 and 70.

I have read somewhere that the correct number is 66 but I cannot vouch for this - perhaps new faces appear in the course of time.

The small glade , actually a branch of the Morgenbach valley was transformed in 1974 by a hiking group - several wooden bridges were built and faces carved in the trees.Often when man interferes with what nature has provided the result is less than pleasing but here an interesting blend of the artistic and the natural has been achieved.

The best time of the year to go ? - most probably late spring and summer - say May to September although early autumn(fall) - September to mid October is also pleasant with the largely beech forest resplendent in many shades of yellow and red.The kids also enjoy running ankle deep through the fallen leaves .

A pleasant restaurant awaits one at the end of the walk where one can enjoy a meal and freshly drawn beer!

How long is the walk - it depends on how much time you take to seek out and look at the carvings - it is certainly doable in 40 minutes but could well take up an hour and a half if you wish to get the most out of it or if you have children with you.
